☕ Good Morning

Happy Sunday. It was a week of selective silence — Iran and Russia each recorded their highest weekly blocking counts in our archive, while the Middle East stayed structurally elevated and markets barely moved. Here's what mattered this week, and what we're watching heading into Monday.

🎯 This Week's Calls

Thailand remains our most divergent open call: we're at 52% against a 70% base rate for a confirmed censorship event by 5 September. No OONI blocks recorded this week — 11 measurements over seven days, all below confirmation threshold. The call stays open.

Uzbekistan is the week's reversal: we called 52% vs a 40% base, +12pts divergent. An 8-point deviation spike on Friday put it on the board, but no OONI confirmation yet. Resolution 5 September.

Bangladesh sits at 32% vs 50% for censorship by 5 September — no blocks this week, no change to the call.

FX calls on Sweden and Argentina remain open through 10-12 September. No resolution yet.

📍 The Week That Was

1. Iran and Russia hit simultaneous censorship peaks OONI recorded 1,879 confirmed blocks in Iran and 1,789 in Russia over the past seven days — the highest weekly counts for both countries in our dataset. Iran's blocking targeted messaging platforms and circumvention tools; Russia's pattern matched previous pre-announcement posture. Both countries' deviation scores spiked mid-week and held elevated through Friday. No wire coverage of either surge.

2. OFAC designated six entities in one 72-hour window US Treasury added KAMENG TRADING LIMITED under Iran sanctions, TAEEDI, Reza Mohammad under terrorism designations, and four entities tied to activism on 26 August: MASAR BADIL, AUTISTICI INVENTATI, PALESTINE ACTION, and two individuals. Five delistings followed on 24 August, including FAYZIMATOV and KHALIL. The tempo — six adds in three days after months of light activity — suggests a coordinated designation push.

3. Yemen's deviation spiked then zeroed in 24 hours Yemen went 0 → 5.5 → 0 between Thursday and Saturday — a brief pulse with no follow-through. No corresponding OONI activity, no natural event, no wire coverage. The pattern fits transient conflict reporting that didn't meet our threshold for sustained elevation. Yemen holds structural 92 but hasn't sustained deviation over 7 days.

4. Bellingcat published three West Africa investigations in 48 hours Tracking a Sanctioned Russian Vessel's West African Odyssey, Shahed-Type Drones Filmed During Mali Village Attacks, and satellite imagery of border construction in Texas all published between Thursday and Saturday. The Mali drones item is the first confirmed visual documentation of Shahed-type platforms in West Africa's conflict zone.

5. Crisis Group filed eight cables on Iran and US posture Hormuz 27 August #2, Washington 27-28 August, Tehran 27-28 August — the tempo suggests active diplomatic or intelligence movement around the Strait. The subject line "Hormuz" explicitly names the chokepoint. No corresponding market move in crude (USO -0.24% on the week) or energy equities (XLE +0.63%).

6. Syria's deviation oscillated daily: 6 → 12.6 → 6 → 0 → 0 → 8.7 → 11.8 → 10.4 No single driver in the context explains the pattern. No OONI blocks, no seismic event, no wire headline. The trajectory suggests intermittent conflict reporting or data-feed volatility. Syria holds structural 90; we are not calling the deviation meaningful until a driver is identified.

7. Iceland voted against restarting EU accession talks BBC reported the vote Friday. Iceland has no structural risk (CII not in our top 85), but the decision reverses a multi-year trajectory and marks the first European state to formally reject EU proximity talks in over a decade. Watch for Nordic bloc commentary Monday.

🌍 The Board: Weekly View

Movers Iran 85 (▲+15) — 1,879 OONI blocks over 7 days, highest on record for Iran Venezuela 68 (▲+8) — driver not identified in this week's data Niger 63 (▲+8) — driver not identified in this week's data Uzbekistan 31 (▲+8) — deviation spike Friday, no OONI confirmation yet China 40 (▲+7) — 4 OONI blocks, below significance threshold; driver not identified Syria 90 (▼-6) — oscillating daily, no sustained driver identified

Markets Gold ETF (GLD) dropped -3.24% — the week's largest single-asset move, no geopolitical correlation in the data. Crude (USO -0.24%) and energy equities (XLE +0.63%) flat despite eight Crisis Group Hormuz cables. Treasury bond ETF (TLT -0.30%) and dollar index (UUP +0.57%) moved in tandem with Fed commentary, not geopolitics.

What would change our mind: A confirmed OONI block in Thailand by 2 September, or an FX move in Sweden or Argentina crossing the 1.92% / 2.08% thresholds we published this week. Both are checkable against the call sheet above.
